Renewed with the hope for a better, brighter future, we have turned the page on the roller coaster of 2020. Is your skin lagging in your optimistic progress into 2021? Zoom meetings, online school schedules, and virus fears had us in constant stress, reaching for our favorite comfort foods. With gym closures and all the time indoors, we then called for takeout and retreated to the couch with Netflix at the end of the day to relax. While these habits may have gotten us through a rough year, one thing is for sure, our skin is paying the price. If dull, dry, and tired skin is staring back at you in the mirror, it is time for a skin reboot. This post will tell you how to detox your skin in a week, to match the renewed hope you feel for 2021.

HOW TO DETOX SKIN IN A WEEK

Truth be told the skin is not a detoxifying organ. The detoxifying function in the body is regulated by the kidneys and liver. It is a misnomer to say “detox the skin.” However, due to its prevalence in the industry, I will use the word ‘detox’ with regards to the skin with a disclaimer.  When I use the term ‘detox the skin,’ I am referring to improving the health of the skin.

How to detox the skin in a week is to improve the skin’s epithelial tissue. The outer most layers of the skin receive nutrients from your blood. We can aid in making this delivery system more efficient by targeting our sleep, diet, and exercise. The direct way to care for your outer self is by treating the skin topically. Through home and professional skin care, we can create a gorgeous palate by reinforcing hydration and lipids to the skin cells and protecting the skin’s barrier from moisture loss. Follow these four steps for a week, or longer, to radiate your beauty in 2021.

STEP 1: DETOX THE SKIN BY GETTING QUALITY SLEEP

Starting the night before your skin detox begins, prepare for a successful day by turning of screens an hour before bed and going to bed early. Sleep is the time when our body heals and renews. The body’s healing mechanisms are kicked into high gear when the conscious mind and body are at rest. Each night this week, commit to 7 – 8 hours of sleep. After washing your face and applying restoring Renight Cream, lie comfortably in bed and play Yoga Nidra to lull you into a deep, skin healing slumber. A good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do for the health of your skin.

STEP 2: DETOX THE SKIN BY REMOVING HARMFUL SUGARS FROM YOUR DIET

Set down the doughnut and coffee and pick up a banana and green tea. To improve digestion and delivery of nutrient rich blood to your skin’s tissue, overhaul your diet. The food you eat indirectly affects the skin’s health. To support your skin detox, eliminate foods that inflame and slow the digestion. The number one culprit that contributes to unhealthy skin is sugar. Sugars increase glycation in the skin cells. Glycation is the reaction between sugars, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. This means cellular damage and speeds the aging process of the skin. Akkk! Something we do not want. Sugar, or glucose, gives us energy. However, most people get waaaayyy more sugar than they need causing the blood to become acidic. Acidic blood denatures proteins which are important carriers of nutrients to the skin. Choose good sugars, present in foods that are not processed, like fruit and whole grains. Check food labels and opt for foods with no added sugar. Removing unhealthy sugars from your diet will jump start your skin’s health into vibrancy!

STEP 3: DETOX THE SKIN WITH A DAILY EXERCISE ROUTINE

Get that blood pumping! Incorporate time to exercise into your morning routine. Morning exercise has multiple benefits including increasing your breathing and heart rate thus improving oxygen delivery to your skin. When your heart rate and circulation elevate, the lymph system gets moving as well. Lymph fluid holds waste products and immune boosting cells. When toxins accumulate, the skin gets puffy and swollen (think under eye bags). When you breathe heavily during a high intensity workout, the lungs act as pump for your lymphatic system, removing toxins and leaving you feeling refreshed and renewed!

STEP 4: DETOX THE SKIN WITH A FACIAL

When you set out for your seven day detox, do not skip your facial. While you are drifting off into relaxation, your esthetician will double cleanse the skin to remove surface impurities, exfoliate to dissolve dull, dry, dead skin cells, then, treat and protect to restore hydration and lock in moisture. If you have been out of the habit of visiting your esthetician due to the pandemic, schedule your next visit today. For the month of January, YoMo Skincare is featuring the 90 minute Skin Regimen Detox facial. This facial includes a rubberizing mask with coconut activated charcoal, white clay and ginseng to absorb impurities and energize your skin. While supplies last, receive a complementary travel size Skin Regimen product. For your protection, technicians are wearing masks, shields, and have the room well ventilated. If you are still wanting to stay safely at home, be sure to care for your skin with a daily skin care routine.

How to detox you skin in a week is to commit to self-compassion and care. The unhealthy comfort foods and zoning out in front of your screen may feel good in the moment but they are not getting you what you ultimately want: beautiful, healthy skin. Incorporating healthy habits of getting quality sleep, improving your diet, exercising daily, and a regular facial routine will result in looking better but more importantly, they will make you feel better! After your weeklong detox, you will be ready to face 2021 head on with flawless skin and a confident glow.

Happy New Year to all. Wishing you joy and happiness in the year ahead. Thank you for your love, loyalty, and continued support. YoMo Skincare would not have made through 2020 without you.
